Type + Image Design: White
Taught by Franz Werner at Rhode Island School of Design -- Summer Institute of Graphic Design Studies. 2 week course. Project was 3 days.
This project was very open and we could do our project on anything "white." It could relate to white, or be something about light, or the reflection of light. Anything. I chose to do my project on white privilege.
I started out by doing some research. I decided to make 5 categories that white privilege is prevalent in -- Education, Justice, Beauty Standards, Literature and Cinema, and Social Media. Then I decided to use light sensitive cloth, objects, and print outs to make an image that represented one of those categories. I collected and printed objects that represented the 5 categories, then placed them on the light sensitive cloth outside in the sun. The cloth changed colors to reveal x-ray like silhouettes of the objects/print outs. Some of the objects/print outs did not transfer well onto the cloth, so I used photoshop to edit them. (Left is original, right is edited)
Next, I moved to the text part of my project. I wanted to have some text about the category and how white privilege is prevalent in that area. With limited time, I decided to use quotes and poems as the accompanying text. After finding the quotes and poems, I created a small booklet about white privilege. This was my final product.
